The State Key Laboratory for Microbial Technology (SKLMT) was formally established at Shandong University in November 1995 with the financial aids of World Bank (1.2 million US dollars) and the Chinese Government (3.6 million yuan RMB).With the establishment of SKLMT, research orientation was made clear and research methods were further improved, while more state-of-the-art laboratory equipment was employed. Through active scientific exchanges, outstanding researchers have been nurtured and they are in charge of a considerable amount of national research programs. A series of research achievement has been obtained. About 30 awards were attained from Chinese government and Shandong province. In addition, great efforts have been made to strengthen academic programs and facilitate intellectual development. As a result, research on biochemistry and molecular biology as well as microbial technology has been greatly promoted. Nowadays SKLMT has been regarded across the whole country as one of the most important bases for basic research in the microbial technology field, applied and developmental research and intellectual development.
